Profile: Woody Shea

Personal background
I am a 32 year-old computer programmer living in Austin, Texas, USA. I've been interested in the SETI project for a long time, but not quite interested enough to go get a doctorate and try for a paid position. :-)
As for hobbies, I don't do a whole lot... Taking my dog to the park might be considered one I guess. I just hang out, play with my computers, and enjoy life.
Thoughts about SETI and SETI@home
It seems very unlikely that ours is the only planet to have developed life. With the discovery of planets orbiting other stars and Martian bacteria, I am more certain than ever that life has developed on other planets. I have absolutely no idea how rare creatures as intelligent as human beings are, though.
I heard a mathematician, at one time, suggest using gravitational pulses to communicate... That sort of tickled me the right way, although I do understand just how weak a force gravity is. I do believe that SETI is the most likely organization to find anything that might be out there.
I do have one other thought... I assume that the analysis done would cover this, but what if a few seconds, or microseconds, of signal (say an alien TV program) are sent at once across a spectrum of bandwidths? This could be developed by necessity if, say, there is a regular 'tick' of radio disturbance from some nearby source...
