Profile: Alan DM

Personal background
Alan DM, 59. I'm a writer, editor from Toronto, ON, Canada. Father to 30-year-old astrophysicist Douglas JM and mercurial math genius Victoria JSM, 17.
I'm an avid reader, passionate about the rights of people around the world, the freedom of information and forever a believer we are not alone. Played rugby for Uganda, East African President's XV and London Wasps, including a memorable game for the 3rd XV. Born in London, England, Nov. 1946, raised in Nakuru, Kenya, boarded at Duke of York School, Nairobi, worked for slightly more than a year April '66 to May '67 as the Uganda correspondent of the Nairobi-based Daily Nation before moving to London, a four-year NUJ/NPA sponsored apprenticeship in journalism and scores of casual shifts on the Daily Sketch and the London Sun. In July, 1971, I joined the Scottish Daily Record, as a sub, left in Nov. 1976 as deputy chief sub tobe associate editor at supermarket tab Midnight Globe, taking it from 800,000 to 2.25 million a week (death of Elvis) and from a black and white scandal sheet choked with contradictory conspiracy theory stories and fabricated celebrity gossip to a more mainstream supermarket tab, full-colour, emphasis on lifestyles and health and wellness. Two and a half years later, joined the staff of the Montreal Gazette, including tours of duty as foreign editor, weekly review editor and science editor. In May, '83 joined the Toronto Star, moving through foreign, national, city and weekend desks, page one editor, Sunday editor and Asst. Managing Editor. Currently Editor, New Ventures.
