Thoughts about SETI and SETI@home |
1) ET undoubtedly exists - In an infinite multiverse, an infinite number of permutations make it a certainty, 'tho arguably not within our perceivable dimensions. I feel we may have discovered ET life already, or rather it's discovered us aka some rather strange viruses and bacteria: however, the question of intelligent ET's is rather more imponderable until a UFO lands in my back-yard! Many of the dangers of contact are, I feel, exagerated. There is no reason to assume that ET should be a threat; an entirely unrelated evolutionary path would surely endow them with characteristics quite different from those possessed by terrestial creatures (us included)
2) Shout from the rooftops! We need to know that we are not alone, if only to curb our own arrogance. Send them examples of our greatest works of art - there is surely no better measure of culture or achievement.
3) Why do I run SETI@home? I want to know I'm not alone! Keep the project running; lobby Congress, NASA, the UN, the EEC, the Pope, anyone for funding if necessary. |
