Yes extraterrestrial life exists. You have already met it, you just don't know it. Humans are of no practical use to other life forms. Beacons are useless since you have nothing to offer the cosmos, it's like shining a light in someones face over and over and never speaking to them, it gets rather annoying.
I run Seti@Home because I want to. Gathering information is always useful.
