Profile: LISTENER1944

Personal background
I am a 62 year old, semi-retired man living in San Francisco. I have worked for many years as a registered nurse (AA degree) and am presently enrolled as a part-time, undeclared Masters student at San Francisco State University with the eventual goal of getting a degree in English Literature. My BA is in Classics. I speak and read workman-like Spanish and have traveled extensively in Latin America. I am an active member of a local Anglo-Catholic parish of the Episcopal Church. My interests include classical music, English literature (especially poetry), travel, gardening, archaeology, and a long-standing fascination with science fiction, space exploration, AI, and cutting-edge science of all sorts.
Thoughts about SETI and SETI@home
I feel sure that there is other life in the Universe; probably wide-spread and probably even in our own solar system. Intelligent life is, I think, probably rare and space-going intelligent life even rarer. I participate in SETI because I want to be a small part of the hunt. If communication of some sort from ETs is found, I believe that a reply should be made only after an international consensus is formed. Until we think that we know something about the intentions and capabilities of the ETs, it would surely be prudent to remain silent: they might be as benevolent as a congregation of Quaker social workers or they might consider broiled human baby livers a delicacy.
