Personal background
I am 44 years old and live in Hillsboro Texas. I have a 10 year old daughter, Sarah who crunches SETI data units on her own PC. She performed a SETI presentation to her 3rd grade classmates in the spring of 2004.

At the time I joined SETI@Home, I was a 3D animator running Wavefront Advanced Visualizer on SGI machines. My desire to spend more time with my daughter made me change careers.

I now design and manage websites and am editor/publisher of a trade magazine, iCOM Magazine serving the film and video production and postproduction industry.

I like to spend time with my daughter, biking, playing tennis, fishing, playing cards, building puzzles and recording music. She is a good little pianist and we have a digital studio with various instruments that keep us busy. You can hear some of her music and some of mine on her website at www.sarahjackson.com.

I would not be here today had it not been for a liver transplant I received in April 2001. This explains why I did not complete any data units for almost 3 years. It was a long, hard journey which left me bed-ridden and on the edge of death for several months. The recovery took even longer.

Now I simply enjoy waking up without pain and living another day. Needless to say, I do not sweat the small stuff anymore and I would advise anyone to simply enjoy life while you have it. You may not get another chance. I am trying to find an Extraterrestrial who has a cure for Hepatitis C. Anybody run across one of those yet?
Thoughts about SETI and SETI@home
I am certain that Extraterrestrial life exists. There are billions upon billions of ways that could happen. The odds of us being the only self-aware beings in the universe is like winning the lotto in 3 different countries for 26 weeks in a row.

The question is, can we even perceive their presence? Are we wasting our time with radio waves? Perhaps they do not even utilize them. We may not be able to identify them if they were sitting in our backyard. One of the problems with mankind is that we always have to believe we are more important than we may actually be or that anything intelligent is going to look or think like us.

So I guess when a vehicle lands from outer space, I will be one of the people running and screaming SAVE ME. But I will be one of the people running toward it.

I do not think it matters if we send a beacon. With that said, one of my favorite movies is Contact with Jode Foster. I also love the original Star Trek and Next Generation. It is all about hope.

And that is why I crunch data units for SETI - hope.
