Personal background |
I've been interested in space ever since boyhood, when the astronauts first climbed atop the Redstone Rocket. Then I read Heinlein, Bester and Larry Niven. Space is the next frontier, one vaster than all Earth's oceans, with infinite and shocking variety. It would be a shame if humanity turned inward and refused to dream of a better future.
I'm 45, and a college-educated construction worker who has come to enjoy working with my hands. In my spare time I write Science fiction, and read SF, history and current topics. Plus I play with road racing cars-- see http://www.scca.org. I've raced some myself, which is too expensive. But mostly I'm a corner worker -- or turn marshall for European SETI'ers. Which means I get to crawl under overturned cars. Go to http://www.lakeeriecommunications.com for more details on that. I'm single, two cats, intermittant girlfriend. |
Thoughts about SETI and SETI@home |
I'm certain extraterrestrial life exists. The basic biology of life is too simple and the universe too vast for life, even intelligent life not to exist in quantity. But I have no idea when or how humans will discover it. If FTL drives are both possible and practical, I expect someone will pick up a radio system and go experiment. But more likely First Contact will begin a slow and arduous series of radio communications.
I consider the dangers of such contact virtually nil. Of course an alien species may turn out to be xenophobic, after all human history is dotted with our own episodes of mass murder. But I am optimistic that such behavior combined with modern weapons would ensure such civilizations live a short, interesting history. Distances are too great for much threat. Instead, contact offers the real opportunity to improve our society, by comparing our experiences with those of other species. I think the realization that we are not alone would help sober our species, and make us realize how often our differences are really trivial.
To that end I hope humanity continues to invest in both SETI research but in beacon formation. I think First Contact would be good for humanity, and I run SETI on my 8500 and my Powerbook because I want a place in that history. |
