Personal background
I am a 32 y.o. Man who's always had a dreamy eye towards the sky. I grew up in Puerto Rico and visited quite often the Arecibo Radio Telescope. It was one of my favorite places to visit. As a young boy growing up in the Star Wars Generation I've always wondered about our existence within this universe. Being lazy about mathematics (but actually quite adept at it) I've always figured that it is mathematically impossible that we can consider ourselves the only beings in this universe. Perhaps the most intelligent, but quite improbable. After college I joined the US Air Force where I served for nine years and my vision was augmented by the prospects of extra terrestrial intelligence. I've read several books which have attuned my thought of life in this universe. One, though not directly related, was "The Elegant Universe". One prevailing thought that came to fruition from that book was..."If we have not yet mastered or discovered everything within our own planet...how could we possibly say that there is NO life outside of it?" Thus my desire to get involved with the SETI project.
Thoughts about SETI and SETI@home
I do believe that there is intelligent life outside of our planet. Although I am more likely to win the MegaLotto than finding it, I do think that whatever little my help can provide would be useful. At first I though of SETI as the three geeks in "The X-Files". So I never though much to look into it. But one time surfing the net I decided to look into it and found its process and methods quite straightforward and simple in a way. Of course, having the Arecibo Radio Telescope related to it was quite the selling point. Although I visited often as a child, I never really grasped its concept entirely. So I started running SETI@home to make a useful contribution to the program. Whether we are successful in finding signs of intelligent life during my lifetime, I'm not sure. I have been an agnostic for a very long time, even when I was growing up catholic (by tradition only more than conviction). I feel that I am ready to accept the news of intelligent life outside our world. However, as a human race, I don't think that we are completely ready to do so. We have come a long way in thinking of it as a strong possibility; however, religious ideologies might present the strongest hurdle to overcome. If evidence is found, it should be filtered slowly into common knowledge. I do believe that sudden knowledge might be more than overwhelming for the masses to bear. Challenging centuries of beliefs is not the best route to take. Sudden knowledge might bring mass hysteria and disorder. I do believe that it is everyone's right to know the truth should it become available. But we must be tactful and mindful of the frail human psyche. I think this project is the best tool available to obtain the probable truth. We must be patient and steadfast in our endeavors. It is not a matter of "if" it happens; it's a matter of "when" it happens.
