Thoughts about SETI and SETI@home
I believe that it is scientifically and mathematically impossible that we are alone in the universe. It would be wonderful to find proof of this theory. However, even if we do find proof I think it is unlikely that it will result in us being able to contact an alien race. Nevertheless, it would be prudent to transmit a signal ourselves in case there are other beings who are or someday will search the skies for signs.

I run SETI because it is the best thing I can think of to do with my computer. It's also a challenge, as I'm the kind of guy who tries to squeeze performance out of everything. I'm really getting into liquid cooling and overclocking, and SETI is a great benchmark. My only criticism is that berkeley is not continuously trying to optimize the code for this program and it is left up to more ambitious individuals.

If some day the SETI project is completed, there are plenty of other distributed computing projects underway to which I will devote my computer.
