Personal background
I am an engineer, amateur musician, and also own and operate a dial-up and internet accessible bulletin board system in Fort Worth TX. As long as I can remember, I have always had an interest in science, and especially space science.
Thoughts about SETI and SETI@home
1. Yes, I do believe that extraterrestrial life exists - I think that the universe is too large, and full of opprtunities for life to be created for this to be anything but a certainty. I have no idea when and how we on this planet will discover it - whether we find it here while on this planet, through remote passive exploration, or when we are far enough along to go personally into space looking for it. I believe that there is also the possibility extraterrestrial life may find us. The benefits to our civilization and planet are potentially greater than anything we have yet imagined, especially if the contact comes with a civilization that has long ago solved the problems existing on this planet. There would also be a cultural impact of immense proportions when the caretakers of this planet can finally know with certainty that we are not alone. The usefulness of such a contact will depend upon the delays incurred in exchanging communications. Nearer, faster connections are potentially better than slower ones farther away. The dangers are perhaps too often portrayed in science fiction - that we encounter a hostile civilation or a biologically-incompatible one.

2. I believe that we should only transmit such beacon if our civilization is ready for a response. When we are, then I believe we should send as much information that we can describing us as possible.

3. I run SETI@home because I want to help in the search, and do not mind contributing a portion of my system processors resources to the project. I believe this to be important, and a very appropriate use of technology.
