Profile: Northstar

Personal background
My psudonym is "Northstar". I decided to call myself this as I am from the Great White North...well, Canada. My real name is Tony White and I'm a Realtor in the Greater Halifax Regional Municipality.

One of my acquaintances once found and named an astronomical event and it has fascinated me since. I first heard about Seti a few years ago in the late 90's. I wanted to become a host then, but I was on dial-up and I was running a higher end 486 and didn't think it was adequate.

Soon though, I'd forgotten about Seti. Years passed and then last year I was working with a client/friend and he had Seti on his two home systems and claimed it was on his work system as well. I was intrigued. I thought about it, and since I was on a Cable Modem now and running a PIII 500 I thought that it wouldn't really bog down my system. Haven't looked back since.

I hope I help, in some way, to bring humans closer to the stars!

Thoughts about SETI and SETI@home
1) I think Extraterrestrial Life DOES exist. To risk sounding lame...we'd have to be pretty cocky to think we're the only planet to produce life just because we haven't encountered it yet in our meager attempts to explore or lunar and solar system. We'll only chance discovering it when and only when humans can travel outside the solar system and get to others within a much shorter period of time. By discovering new lifeforms, we risk encountering a race of beings bent on domination, expansion and destruction. However, we also run the chance of encountering peaceful, philanthropic beings who may have answers to some of our most trying problems. Who knows? Do you take the chance on finding them first or having them eventually find us?
