Profile: Niklas Andersson

Personal background
Well... I'm Niklas Andersson, Helsingborg, Sweden. I'm a 28 year old former physics/math/chemistry/biotech -student at the Lund university. Some say that I'm intelligent thou I have an IQ of 149. I developed my intrest for space and astronomy at early age, and I've always been facinated by the thought of that other planets could(?) having life. Among my other intrests is music is the biggest, and I play pop/experimental music using synthesizers and sometimes guitar. If you want you can visit my homepage and listen to it :-)
Thoughts about SETI and SETI@home
1. There are too many stars with too many planets, so my conclusion is: Yes, there are many more planets with life. And then I see intelligence as a part of the evolution, so I suspect that we are one of many civilizations out there (here?). A problem with such a discovery could be for example theological. But I think that the benefits with a more advanced civilization could be much more greater! Just think of learning to take care of the earth and all its millions of species, to learn from their misstakes. If they were at our level we could learn from eachother.

2. There are theoretically both dangers and possibilities with setting up a beacon. The first danger that I think of is that we don't know a extraterrestial mind. What if they are typical predators that see us as a comming threat? But then on the other hand I ask myself: What kind of creature evolve intelligence? The strong predator? No, I don't think so. I think that it's the weak creatures way of surviving the predators. Look at the mammals here on earth. They were unlithe, so they had to survive by their intellect.
And last: We are a quite strong source of radiowaves. We practically scream out our existance. If we should send any dedicated signal into space, the most difficult thing would be to calcluate a frequency to send. Every logical frequency you can think of is based on the meter, second, or joule; units that are based on our local environment on earth :-(

3. I run SETI@home beacause I think that the SETI project is very important and that they have to relay on sponsors. The only contribution that I can give is a piece of calculating power and, if I come to think of something, an e-mail or two... ;-)
