Profile: Na'reth

Personal background
Trained as a vertebrate palaeontologist, I've worked the last twelve years as a novelist and short story writers. I've written four dark fantasy novels (THE FIVE OF CUPS, SILK, THRESHOLD, and LOW RED MOON) and am currently working on my fifth, and my short fiction has been collected in two volumes, TALES OF PAIN AND WONDER and FROM WEIRD AND DISTANT SHORES. I have received the International Horror Guild Award three times, as well as the Barnes and Noble Maiden Voyage award, and been nominated for the Bram Stoker and British Fantasy awards. I've also scripted comics for DC Comics/Vertigo. My palaeontological work has been published in the JOURNAL OF VERTEBRATE PALEONTOLOGY, JOURNAL OF PALEONTOLOGY, and INTERNATIONAL BULLETIN OF ZOOLOGICAL NOMENCLATURE. Born in Ireland, I was educated at the University of Alabama in Birmingham and the University of Colorado (Boulder). I have a strong interset in astronomy and cosmology, with an emphasis on exobiology. I spend a lot of time thinking about Europa.

FARSCAPE is my favorite television series. My hobbies include costuming, movies, and travel.

Thoughts about SETI and SETI@home
I believe that life is probably very common in the universe, arising inevitably from certain chemical and enviromental conditions. Civilizations are far less common, making our chances for contact remote, but not impossible. The potential dangers and benefits from contact are obvious; we only have to examine the history of our own planet to begin to see possibly consequences.

We have a duty to search for extraterrestrial life, and we should transmit the most fundamental and comprehensive data sets possible, including cultural and scientific information on our species and the other species on Earth.

I run SETI at home because I want to feel I'm performing some part, however small, in the search for life beyond Earth.
