Personal background
I am 41 years old and live in the United States of America in the city of Staten Island, New York. My interest in SETI came about many years ago while reading numerous works by the late Dr. Carl Sagan, and other related works in astronomy and planetary science. My specific interests in science are related to biology and neuroscience, which technically are not subjects that are far removed from the spectral analysis of background and directed physical energies. I am a graduate of Devry Institute of Technology (Oct 1984) and received a certificate in Electronic Technology.
Thoughts about SETI and SETI@home
The SETI at home program is a brilliant idea and a terrific use of distributed computing technology and what would have been wasted CPU cycles. I chose to crunch SETI data because it was the most practical way to be involved in a fruitful scientific endeavor. I believe that the SETI project is a practical, relatively low cost way of assessing the tremendous ocean of data and possible sources of evidence of the existence of non-natural electromagnetic spectra. For me the question of whether extraterrestrial life exists is not important. The definition of life and what is meant by living and intelligence is of paramount concern to me. Once these operational definitions are nailed down I believe that we will have ample evidence that we are not alone. Honestly I think there is a high probability that life exists extra and intra terrestrially. I predict that humans will discover other forms of "life" and "intelligence" once we crack some fundamental issues surrounding general and special relativity as well as some quantum level physical problems that have yet to afford us a real clue. I also feel that humanity cannot in itself solve these fundamental problems by using its own organic brain: humans will need the assistance of machines and computers to help us find the patterns in the maze.
