Personal background
I was always fascinated about the possibility of intelligent, extraterrestrial lifeforms. I know "contact" isn't very likely to happen because of the wide spreading of technologically advanced civilisations (if they exist) in space and time, but this attempt (Seti) seems to be the only chance to ever know.

I'm currently studying physics in Germany/Göttingen, sometimes bored of the mathematical background given there. Therefore it's exciting to understand the principle of the Seti@home-client, the fourier analysis, finally having found some use in studying ;).

I don't have a fast computer, and I don't expect to be of any importance to the search. But if some day a real contact is established, I can somewhat be proud of having participated. Well, if I'm alive then...
Thoughts about SETI and SETI@home
Do you think extraterrestrial life exists? If so, when and how will humans discover it? What are the possible benefits and dangers of such a discovery?
Yes, I think so. But Because of the long distances in space and espacially in time (-> how long does a civilisation survive? What if there was a signal long before the seti search or long after the last human has vanished?), the probability of contact is low, at least in my opinion. But if it really happened, it could be great. Aside from technological benefits, it would alter the point of view of the whole humanity. No longer being the only "intelligent" species, humanity could unite, as mentioned in Star Trek "First Contact" ;) . And in the long term (thousands of years), it would push the development of space travel, giving us more chances to survive a global cataclism.

Should humans transmit a beacon for others to find? If so, what information should we send?
Yes, why not? The danger of ugly green aliens conquering the world is a typical creation of hollywood. We should send a "learning" program, trying to make the "aliens" understand our language. The best attempt would be to rely on fundamental trues, such as mathematical principles. In my opinion that would be the best common ground to start with. Then perhaps a few Images (along with the wavelengths of the colors used) - an image says more than thousand words, doesn't it?

Why do you run SETI@home? What are your views about the project? Any suggestions?
I feel my computer is running without any sense sometimes. Views: mentioned before. Suggestions: what if all civilisations are just listening, no one sending? We should really think about sending signals on our own, but then again, in what direction?
