Thoughts about SETI and SETI@home
I'd like to think we're not alone out here. Plus, I'd like to think something of
value was produced by my dotcom gig. I had an Alpha on my desk and a
Pentium box, both with Redhat Linux, and only was halted in my crunching by
interruptions in the power supply. Perhaps PG&E is in it with Them to keep us from meeting the Space Brothers. Yeah, that's the ticket. If the saucer people show up and act nice, I'm still going to keep an eye out for the big book called
"To Serve Man."

If we do contact aliens, we should send them a beacon with very specific
instructions on a planet-sized order of take-out food. Then we should misdirect
them to Venus and get a good chuckle as they orbit the fiery planet
wondering who in blazes ordered six billion orders of mu shu pork. Basically, I
think prank interplanetary beacons are the way to go. We might not see the results
within our lifetimes, but our kids would get a good chuckle out of it.
Or be annihilated by pissed-off aliens, sure, but either way, we'll already have
checked out by then. Just the thought of receiving that first reply, "Earthlings!
Who is this Mike Hunt? We do not have Prince Albert in a can," makes me all
melty inside.

You must admit, it beats all hell out of a Spielbergy "Close Encounters" meeting with the little grey ones.
