Thoughts about SETI and SETI@home |
Why do you run SETI@home? I assume that I do it for the same reasons everyone else does: seems like a waste to have computers sitting idle for most of the day; use it as a computer benchmark; I hope we can find an intelligent signal some day and I\\'m glad to take part in the search.
What are your views about the project? It seems rather impossible, doesn\\'t it? I mean, we\\'re talking about the possibility of another life-bearing planet in our neck of the woods producing a civilization of organisms capable of rising above their self-centeredness to contemplate extraterrestrial life and then believe in it strongly enough to develop the technology to broadcast a signal in all directions into the abyss. And as if that weren\\'t farfetched enough, we\\'re expecting that their broadcast lasted long enough for us to intercept it in our \\"brief moment in time.\\" How long has life been crawling around on planet earth? Billions of years? And how much of that time have we been capable of receiving signals from outer space? Less than 100 years? Chances are far better that we either missed the signal already or else they haven\\'t broadcasted yet. I don\\'t play the lottery because my chances of winning are so poor. But finding an intelligent signal from space -- those chances are impoverished a trillion times more than the state lottery! That\\'s crazy. So crazy it just...might...work! |
