Personal background
Howdy! I'm in Brisbane, Australia, though when I first started with Seti@home I was living in Canberra, Australia. I have been involved in Seti@home since mid 1999. I am both a spcae geek and a sci-fi fan, so Seti@home is my way of finding out if anyone out there is trying to place a call!
Thoughts about SETI and SETI@home
I definitely believe that extraterrestrial life exists. Carl Sagan's formula for where it might do so shows that it would be extreme egotism to believe otherwise! I'd like to think that we'll discover it via Seti@home!! But realistically, I think that we'll hear from a purposeful transmission someday, possibly via one of our spacecraft or space explorers. I think this will be a great event, but I'm not sure about our reaction to it as a planet. I think we're rather at too competitive a stage in our evolution to respond globally, but hopefully we'll have "matured" as a species by the time this happens.

As for sending a beacon, well, it's a nice idea. The kind of CDs sent out with various explorer craft contain a potted history of mankind and our culture, but are possibly too Western-civilization biased to be truly representative - I guess that's a symptom of our immaturity!

I run Seti@home because I like being part of a project that says even if governments won't fund scientific research, there are those of us who believe that it is too important not to pursue, and with all of us working together, "the sum of the many can achieve wonders".
