Personal background
Although I’m a geek like almost everybody on this list, I thought it would be fun to tell people about the Society for Creative Anachronism (SCA), which is my main hobby. This is an international group of nearly 50,000 people dedicated to the study of European History between the fall of Western Rome and the Colonization of the New World (approx. 500 A.D. – 1600 A.D.) We research and recreate as many desirable aspects of that history as we can, from food and clothing, to dance and leatherworking, and much more. We do leave out the plague and torture and such, so don’t be afraid on that score. :-) If you might be interested in learning more about the SCA you can go to:

The SCA Home Page: http://www.sca.org/
My home Kingdom’s Website: http://calontir.sca.org/

If you are curious or your already a member and want to introduce yourself my SCA persona name is Bran the Dark, and I live in the Barony of Mag Mor in the Kingdom of Calontir. I’ve been a member of the SCA for about 16 years now. I’m mainly interested in Historical Lighting and Cooking. I’ve thought about starting an SCA Seti group and would be interested in meeting other people to discuss it. You can email me at malcolm@hostetler.com with any questions or just to say hello.
Thoughts about SETI and SETI@home
While I obviously have an interest in the past, I also like to dream about the future. It’s my hope that discovering life on another planet, even non-sentient life like Lichen or Bacteria, will wake our world up to the idea of a larger picture. Unfortunately I’m forced to agree with Isaac Asimov who theorized (and I’m paraphrasing here) that if there is infinite space and thus an infinite number of planets, then there is an infinitely positive chance that other life exists but that there could be basically an infinite amount of space between two such planets supporting life. It’s my hope that there are an infinite number of life supporting worlds out there, hopefully some are nearby enough that we can detect them, and wouldn’t it be amazing if they to had intelligent life.
