Profile: ArthurDent

Personal background
Mathematics and Computer Sciences have always interested me, so now I'm studying them at the Technical University Ilmenau. It is a small university, but very nice, located in the Thuringian Forest in the center of Germany. My hobbies are listening to music, reading, driving bike and car. ArthurDent is just a nickname, Arthur is the main character of my favourite book "The hitchhiker's guide to the galaxy" written by Douglas Adams, who has unfortunately died recently.
Thoughts about SETI and SETI@home
Of course I think, that extraterrestrial life exists, otherwise it would be quite senseless to run seti@home on my computer. There are so many planets in universe so it's quite impossible that we are the only intelligent lifeform. Another question is if we ever meet "them", besides the fact that they perhaps have already been here, I think that this is much less possible because of the great distances between the stars and planets. When I first heard of Seti@home from a friend I thought that this is a quite good idea: using the unused CPU-capacity for something wich makes sense. The most time the CPU runs on 5-10% and that is such a waste, so I'm glad now to know that my PC has something to do if I don't have something to do for it. Even if we can't communicate with extraterrestrial beings because we must at least wait some years for an answer, just the knowledge that "they" are there somewhere is for me a reason to run seti@home on my computer.
