Personal background
I was born in Kansas, lived in England and Tacoma Washington for awhile and then was moved to Birmingham Alabama in the mid 60's. Been stuck here ever since. I'm 54 and semi-retired from building houses. Now I build experimental aircraft. I'm a pilot and I fly a 75% scale replica of the WWII P51 Mustang. I am also building a 73% scale of the famous British Spitfire. Obviously I love aviation but I also love sports, football, baseball, tennis, bowling and many more. I hate basketball even though I helped coach Charles Barkley when he was 8 years old. (go figure)
I love science and feel that we've mearly scratched the surface of what we will learn in the future.
Thoughts about SETI and SETI@home
I have felt since day one that there has got to be life in outer space. When I was just a kid, experts thought that life could not possibly thrive except for the special conditions that we have on earth. I never believed that and now science research is proving them wrong. Life has been found flourshing in places that would make even Mars a better home. In space time, man has only been on this planet a few seconds and his comprehension of just what is out there is very limited. My favorite saying is: the more you know, the more you know you don't know.
I am pretty certain that extraterrestrial life will be discovered in the near future and I want to be around to witness this event. I'm a little concerned at how people will react to the news. There will always be those who will deny it no matter what proof sits in front of them. There will also be those who will panic and profess doom and gloom for our planet. Then again there will be those who see it as an inspiration and an answer to many of our questions.
I think the Seti at home program is a great opportunity for people like me to contribute something besides just an opinion about the possibility of extraterrestrial life.
