Personal background
I am a recently retired software engineer living in the San Jose area. I enjoy the outdoors, computer games, bridge, reading, and interesting conversation. I am interested in the work SETI is doing and am happy to make my small contribution.
Thoughts about SETI and SETI@home
1. Yes, there is certainly life out there. However, the probability of finding intelligent life at the stage we are in is remote, considering how long it took us to get here vs. the few years we have been technologically capable of communicating with other parts of the universe. Also, any signals we receive could be very old signals, possibly from millions of years back, making 2-way contact unlikely in our lifetimes.

The benefits of making contact are primarily scientific, i.e. to help us understand ourselves, where we came from, and where we're going. I see no danger. Surely the other side will be as eager to learn about us as we are about them.

2. Yes, we should certainly transmit a beacon for others to find. The information we send should include a pictorial history of evolution on our planet, including a description of human beings, our biology, and our civilization.

3. I enjoy making my small contribution to the SETI effort. I think the SETI project is very worthwhile. I would like to see information about SETI projects and successes reported on the SETI window at regular intervals.
