Profile: Dan Hunt

Personal background
From Blair, Nebraska. I'm a 4th generation member of my family business that specializes in telecommunications. In the last 20 years we've diversified into several other businesses. My day-to-day responsibilities are to run our ISP, HunTel.net. Look for our homepage at http://www.huntel.net. You can find out more about my family's entire business at http://www.huntelworld.com.

In my volunteer time I work with the Boy Scouts of America. My Council is the Mid-America Council (http://www.mac-bsa.org) based in Omaha. I also volunteer with the local historical association (http://www.newashcohist.org) and lend my tallents to other various civic groups as time and interest allow.

I am also a private pilot and enjoy flying the Cessna 172 in which I have an ownership share. The plane is based in Blair (K46) and is registered as N73786. I am not instument rated but intend to get my IFR certification some day. I do enjoy long cross-country trips when the weather is good.
Thoughts about SETI and SETI@home
I enjoy participating in the Seti program because I think it is arrogant to believe that we are the only intelligent life in the Universe. At the same time I think that the chances of us actually communicating with another galactic civilization are remote. When (and I do believe it is "when", not "if") we discover the first signs of extraterrestrial life it will be thousands of light years from Earth. If we choose to send a signal to that star system it will take generations of earth life to reach that system, and then generations to receive a response. That's assuming they even receive and then properly interpret our signal.

But that doesn't decrease the value in answering the question, "Is there other intelligent life out there?" Simply knowing that it exists will change our entire perception of ourselves as a species. I'm am particularly intrigued by the ramifications on our religious institutions. What will the discovery of extraterrestrial life do to our traditional view of "God"?
