Thoughts about SETI and SETI@home |
First of all I have a tremendous amount of respect, curiosity and awe for the infinite amount of space that God has created. We should feel obligated to explore his creation. I am certain that if God did not want us to explore his vast creation he wouldn’t have created it.
I am not sure whether God created other life but the question is very intriguing and I can find no biblical reference that precludes it. Logically I find it very hard to believe that there is not other intelligent life out there, so I want to search for it and SETI@home is the best tool I have to contribute.
I constantly contemplate the possibility of discovering other intelligent life and the possible impact to my faith, but it’s impossible to fully explore the question before it actually happens. There are big differences between discovering another civilization that has greatly advanced beyond ours, one that is less advanced, one that supports my religious beliefs or one that opposes them. I can’t revise my faith based on supposition or theory, I can only go by personal experience and fact.
Most importantly, my faith is strong enough that I am not afraid to ask.
