Personal background
I'm 20 yrs old and study physics with astrophysics at The University Of Leicester (England). During the summer I work as bar and waitering staff at weddings and conferences. I'm a fan of The Leicester Tigers and Aston Villa.
Thoughts about SETI and SETI@home
Only after starting university have I seriously thought about the scale of the universe. Given it's size, and the complexity of the structures so far observed, I feel quite certain that life of some description must have appeared elsewhere. Many of my colleages have reminded me how unlikely a detection event is, but finding nothing is a discovery in itself. Only then can we begin to constructively hypothesise about the likelyhood of intelligent life appearing elsewhere. I run SETI@home because if we don't check WE CAN'T SAY THERE ARE NO ALIENS!!

If extraterrestrial intelligence is detected, I believe it quite unlikely that we will hear a deliberate transmission... we're more likely to be eavesdropping. If this is a valid assumption, then a deliberate transmission of our own would be a waste of resources. Let's keep listening, and maybe we'll see what the Vulcans watch instead of Friends...
