Personal background
I'm a software qa engineer/release engineer (currently out of work) in Boston, Massachusetts. (The picture was taken during my vacation in Tunisia)

In my spare time I play with circuits, hoping to reproduce a few old experiments I never finished in college. I do a fair amount of writing, and so does my wife during the summer months.

I found out about the SETI@home project within weeks of its release from friends at MIT, but I didn't sign on until May 2000, when a few other friends reminded me about it. :) Since then, I've had a number of slower machines until recently, ranging from an old powermac 7200 to a beige g3 running SETI@home.

Now I have a macbook pro dual 2.14, a work computer and an AMD server, all running Seti. I'm happy with the turnover speed.
Thoughts about SETI and SETI@home
We need not think about things in such rigid circumstances; what I believe in should not exclusively govern what I choose to learn. Extraterrestrial life, whether it exists or not, does not depend on my beliefs. No mind has the power, nor would I want any mind to have the power to remove from existence that which it does not believe. Only our efforts to determine whether extraterrestrial life exists or not depend on beliefs, yours and mine. What we all want is the question to be answered, once and for all: Is anyone(or anything) else out there? To that end, I see SETI as a great experiment to find an answer to that question. If our efforts to find an answer determine that there is no life except our own in the universe, it is an answer nonetheless, even if it disappoints us. And if we find that we are not alone, yet another fountain of knowledge will be within sight of all humankind.

So, to end all the philosophical crap, let me say that it is good that we have the privilege to assist in the SETI project, that we may someday answer the question in concrete fashion.
