Personal background
I'm a 39 year old compu-geek that has been playing with PC's since the TRS-80 Model I (see I really am that old!). I've worked in every facet of PC computing including programming, desktop support, LAN administration and teaching.

I absolutely love to read! My favorite subject matter is science fiction and I have quite a collection of sci-fi books. My favorite authors are Anne McCaffrey and Lois McMaster Bujold. I also enjoy reading PC reference text books (okay, so I'm weird).

I've been running SETI now for about three years and as of this writing I've processed 2050 work units. I truly hope that my computer is the one that finds ET!!!
Thoughts about SETI and SETI@home
1. Do you think extraterrestrial life exists? If so, when and how will humans discover it? What are the possible benefits and dangers of such a discovery?

I do think that ET is out there somewhere. My opinion is that we would be foolish (and arrogant) to think that we are the only intelligent life in the universe - of course they probably wouldn't consider us to be intelligent... If or when we do make contact, I hope that we are able to be friends with them. It may very well be possible that we would have something to offer each other. On the other hand, they would probably consider us to be a danger to themselves and the rest of the universe at large and considering the state of our planet today I can't say that I would be able to disagree with them.

2. Should humans transmit a beacon for others to find? If so, what information should we send?

No we shouldn't transmit a beacon to adverstise ourselves. I don't like to think about the TV and radio broadcast that leak into space everyday and that have done so for over seventy years. Sending our likenesses and DNA information out in the void on the space probe was probably one of the dumbest things we've done so far.

3. Why do you run SETI@home? What are your views about the project? Any suggestions?

I run SETI@home because I am hopeful that we will find ET. We should know about them if they exist so that we can be prepared. I think that the project is incredibly important to the development of our race. If we discover that there are other intelligences in the universe then it will drive our technology to new heights as we try harder than ever to develop viable mehtods deep-space travel and communication.
