Personal background
My name is Jared, born in 1977, and living in Seattle, Washington, USA

I grew up with a love for science and science fiction. For as much as I am inspired by the expansive and wondrous nature of our universe, I am also inspired by the visions for humanity told by individuals such as Gene Roddenberry and Arthur C. Clark.

I am a software engineer for Microsoft, and software is ultimately my most fulfilled hobby. But the kid inside me is still very much an amateur scientist - the same kid who, while growing up, built an occasional robot, or tesla coil, or designed an electric car, or simply played with his capsela set.

My other hobbies include: music, biking, snowboarding, driving, pets, and politics / social concern.

I am inspired by 'tinkerers' and 'wonderers' of all sorts and would love to connect with more of these kinds of people.

My dream is to make a significant contribution in computer science in one of the fascinating areas of machine learning, speech recognition, or even AI. I want to deliver the computer we have all heard on Star Trek The Next Generation =)
Thoughts about SETI and SETI@home
SETI gives me an outlet for my wonder and hope for other-worldly life in this universe. Contributing a bit of my electrical bill to this cause is a small gesture to a very important part of my psyche. And collectively, with all our participation, we are making a very important statement about human character and our own worthiness of being discovered.

Last year, I visited the Arecibo Observatory and I only wish I could have seen the equipment actually used. I know that SETI is often at risk of losing access to the Arecibo site, and if that ever happens they will have my support in any way possible. We could start a mass movement to install and interconnect receiving dishes on rooftops around the world!

My suggestion to SETI is to encourage users to consider the energy efficiency of the computers they buy and use for their distributed computing projects. If, somehow, it were possible to add this metric to their charts we could work to improve it.
