Personal background
Why do I run SETI at home? I pay the extra on the electric bill for this because I believe there's a chance this program may find that for which it is seeking; signs of intelligent life beyond any this planet might demonstrate. I'm a true fan of science-fiction novels, especially those which have been adapted to the screen. It drives my partner mad when he brings a sci-fi movie home and I say excitedly, "yeah, I read the book 20 years ago!" My father was a contributing engineer to early days of the Saturn V rocket series that took the Apollo astronauts to the moon. While I have not that kind of expertise, nevertheless I take an interest in the space program, such as it is. I think the days of government-sponsored spaceflight are numbered except for purpose of military expansion. Meanwhile, the business of flying into outer-space rapidly becomes more the domain of privateering capitalists. Of course anything could happen as this expansion of the last frontier develops; hopefully, if a signal is detected, it will give the world governments impetus to lay aside differences and focus on sending humanity to our neighboring planets, and beyond.
