Why do you run SETI@home?
I hate to see CPU cycles go to waste. Besides, SETI is a valid scientific enterprise, and since the SETI folks get virtually no money from anywhere else, I figure this is a good way to make a "charitable" donation.
Thoughts about ETI
I'm not sure if they are out there. If they are behind us in technological development, they won't receive signals we send or transmit to us. If they are much more advanced than us, why have they not traveled here or sent us a signal? This is the Fermi Paradox, as described in "Manifold: Space", by Stephen Baxter. Still, even though the odds are small, we can't willfully ignore the fact that there MIGHT be others out there.
The benefits of contact could be unlimited... new technology, new ways of looking at the universe, etc. The dangers could also be unlimited... it would certainly cause the major religions of Earth to undergo some sort of change, knowing that your Deity of Choice might have also been busy elsewhere.
We've BEEN transmitting, but not a powerful, purposeful signal. I don't know that we should... |
