Personal background
Hi, guys! I'm 26 years old and I live in Norway. I work in the IT Security business. Been more or less active supporting the SETI project on various hardware since 1999.
Thoughts about SETI and SETI@home
1) I think extraterrestrial life exists. After all, our planet is nowhere near 'special', the same conditions for life can be found in countless other solar systems. Even under different conditions, life exists. Scientists has found life in the form of microorganizms to exist inside nuclear reactors where temperature and radiation is high, and inside a vulcano. Even in rock several kilometers down into the earth, where no light or oxygen exists, microscopic bacteria thrives.

We have numerous evidence of fossilized microorganizms embedded inside meteorites which has fallen from the sky, so the very idea of life in the universe is thus proven to exist. I think it is not a matter of when, but a matter of how and when us humans will discover other lifeforms as well as maybe intelligent life.

Two scenarios exist: a) We discover intelligent life. b) intelligent life discoveres us.

The dangers of encountering micro-life are the same as for viruses and bacteria we do not posess natural defenses from. The chances are a massive outbreak of disease. If we encounter intelligent life, the dangers are that the cultural differences may result in the same thing that happened when Columbus invaded America, only this time, the entire human race is the indians. Or, we can learn things from the extraterrestrials technology which will solve every problem on earth.

2) Humans should transmit a beacon, the signal should be SOS. Our planet is dying and is overcrowded.

3) I run SETI@Home because my dream is that one day every problem on earth will be solved by exchanging technology and culture with other sentient life.
