Profile: Bill Stevens

Personal background
Hello,

I live in Thailand. I am 69 years of age. I have been a commercial deep-sea diver most of my life. However, I was a military diver prior to that in both Korea, Pusan and Vietnam, the Mekong Delta.

I have lived in Thailand for most of my life, shortly after leaving my last mission at Vietnam, I came to Thailand where I have been since. My family is from Colorado, all are still living, 2 brothers, 2 sister, over the age of 65. My mother is still living and my father passed away recently, so we are a family with great longevity and scientific curiosity.

SETI is one of the most worthwhile organizations I have ever known and I will promise my continued support and interest as long as I am capable.

I know all of you who feel the same will agree with me whole heartedly.

My best wishes to all who happend to read this.

Thoughts about SETI and SETI@home
Question 1: I firmly believe that extraterrestrial life exists but it will take millions, billions of light years before we are able to comprehend this. The universe is too young for us to be able to receive any forms of confirmation at this point in our growth.

Humans will doscover extraterrestrial life by accident or by SETI and their dedicated program.

If extraterrestrial life is discovered, it will be intelligent and therefore minimize the dangers to our society and planet. It will take too long for them to do anything about us or us to do anything about them. It's just not possible at our technological stage of development.

Question 2: I think if we could transmit a beacon into space for others to locate or find, it should be simple and in the form of repetition, with unscheduled changes in pattern to allow the espier realization that it is not accidental or spontaneous. We could send simple morse code signals or even better, digital code signals in the most simple form.

Question 3: I run SETI@HOME simply because I believe in this project and its ultimate goals; the advancement of society and human-kind. No matter what price is required, it will be worth everything and every heartache millions of times over when success is finally realized. I would like to see the SETI organization attract even more volunteers by various methods. Nothing can be more worthwhile than this type work.
