Thoughts about SETI and SETI@home
Extraterrestrial life likely does exist. I don’t believe Earth is the only planet in this universe to have life on it. There are billions of stars out there and the odds are that at least a few of them have a solar system like ours and the capacity to support life as we know it.

The more realistic questions are; when and where they are in the evolution of life. Are they 1 cell life forms or complex mammals? If they happen to be mammals, where are they on the intelligence scale? Monkeys, dolphins, dinosaurs or similar with small brains and don’t know much about radio communications or are they more advanced and have figured out how to communicate using radio waves.

In the vast expanses of the universe, radio waves can travel a very long way at the speed of light. Even at that rate, it takes decades for radio wave coming from the far reaches of the universe to reach us. If we do just happen to find a radio wave of intelligent nature, it most likely will have originated many years in the past. Any meaningful 2 way dialogue will be extremely difficult or impossible with such a long time lag.

I hope we find a signal with some meaningful intelligence modulated into it. I would be very interested in seeing if a signal can be found, and hope we can extract some useful information from it. Something like in the movie “Contact”. That would be awesome, although much of it is fantasy!

In a sense we have been sending out signal(s) for several years now albeit more directed to earth than space. We should be sending a dedicated and focused signal out into space for them to hear us. If we don’t, then how can we expect to hear them if all they are doing is listening just like us. A bigger question to answer is at what frequency, how it will be modulated, what intelligence should be on it and what direction should we be sending it. Maybe they are not using radio waves at all, maybe they are using light waves and lasers. SETI research will go along way in answering some of these questions.
