Personal background
B.Sc. in computing science/mathematics from University of Calgary in 1977. Took two semesters of astronomy/astrophysics from Dr. Anger, who is now Prof. Emeritus there. We probably worked out of the coldest observatory in North America: the Dominion Observatory at Priddis, Alberta. Just try taking spectrographs of the Pleiades through 6" Newtonian reflectors cemented to a concrete base -- outside of the observatory dome, when it's -35oC! We decided every star we looked at looked hot coffee-coloured!

Am now a trade officer with the Canadian province of Alberta's Ministry of Science and Innovation, specializing in high-tech. (currently on medical leave).
Thoughts about SETI and SETI@home
I doubt SETI will be successful, frankly, but I still think it's just one of those things we need to do as part of exploration of the universe.

I explained to my son (who's entering his 3rd year of a science degree and has just been accepted at York University in Toronto, specializing in aerospace) that running SETI@home gives me a feeling similar to when I drop a loonie (Canadian $1 coin) into the Salvation Army bucket at Christmas :-)
