Profile: phil hughes

Personal background
Hello, I'm Phil Hughes from Wirral, Cheshire, UK. I was born in Liverpool 47 years ago, and am a lifelong supporter of the redder of the city's football teams, although now we live in Cheshire I've developed a soft spot for Tranmere Rovers (it's a bit cheaper to take the kids there too!). I still play football, but at a more leisurely pace now that I'm old and grey. My other hobbies are astronomy, travel, classical music (with a hint of Moody Blues!), walking and photography.
Thoughts about SETI and SETI@home
1. Really hope that there's someone (something??) out there, and that the discovery is made during my lifetime! Discovery of an extraterrestrial civilisation - especially an advanced one - would mean a complete re-evaluation of all our long-held beliefs and values. Perhaps we might not like the change!

2. No reason why we shouldn't send off a radio beacon - we've been sending out radio signal inadvertantly for years. Mind you, considering some of the rubbish we've transmitted, perhaps we should send an apology!

3. I trawl through the data in the genuine hope that a signal is discovered. Love the idea of the SETI project - Carl Sagan's book and film 'Contact' raised the profile enormously, and recently my young son Gareth gave a talk on SETI to fascinated classmates. Don't give up!!
