Personal background
Hi,

I live in Munich, Germany, where I work as a Sales Manager in Software. Needless to say that I'm interested in basically anything that has to do with IT, but besides that I really love to eat and drink, which means that consequently I also like cooking. A thick, heavy red wine, preferrably from Italy, will always be involved. On rare occasions, i.e. when I manage to escape the rat race, I do some composing, singing, writing and sports (Squash, Blades, Snowboard and Soccer). I've been a SETI@home user since summer 1998.
Thoughts about SETI and SETI@home
I guess that people tend to get very philosophical about this matter. We face a number of problems: the link between time and space doesn't seem to follow linear laws. So we don't know how fast or slow the clocks tick elsewhere. Maybe an intelligent race might start to evolve when we rub our eyes in the morning, but by the time we call our wife for some scrambled eggs, they have wiped themselves out in an all-war or something. These guys, of course, would look at us wondering why we don't move, and probably ignore us bored to death. Next problem: evidence. Unfortunately there is none. We don't even know, what precisely we are looking for. Dang it. And - worst of all - the only one who would know, I'm talking about God now, doesn't mention anything about that matter. Reading the Bible, you might think that Earth and mankind is the only topic that has ever been important at all. Even time itself didn't exist before our creation (so God says). And time will cease to exist after the extinction of men (another one of his). So it looks like it's time to get really frustrated because it seems like we are totally alone in this universe. And yet: there's still enough hope to continue our search. So join SETI@home now! At least it makes for a really cool screensaver.

Yours,
Volker
