Profile: Ronin

Personal background
I have been a space buff and a science fiction addict since childhood. I am 44 years old, and live in Japan.

While I consider myself to be a writer, I do technical writing and English teaching to pay bills and buy cat food. I currently live with two four-legged feline friends and support a few of the free citizens of the same species with extra cat food and medical care when the situation warrants.

Thoughts about SETI and SETI@home
1. I most certainly believe that extraterrestrial life exists. Why we haven't discovered evidence of it yet is a definite mystery.

I have often wondered, in an idle sort of way, if we are being treated to an interstellar version of Star Trek's Prime Directive with us as the primitive species that needs to be kept isolated from the community until we mature.

Obviously there may be benefits to such contact (see Shirley MacLaine if you want the pie in the sky giggle-fest view of such), but it would be well to remember Pellegrino's fundamental Three Laws of Alien Behavior as well:

1) Their survival will be more important than our survival.

2) Wimps don't become top dogs.

3) They will assume that the first two laws apply to us.

2. So, I am not sure that broadcasting our location is a good idea. Call me paranoid, but I would rather find them first rather than risk calling too much attention to ourselves until we have a strong space-based industrial foothold.

This may be a moot point because we have been broadcasting signals into space for more than 50 years now. If there is anyone out there listening, they have already heard us.

3. I strongly support SETI research and hope that we soon establish once and for all that we are NOT alone in the universe and that we share the universe with other thinking beings, the better. SETI@home is a wonderful idea and I am happy to have the chance to participate.

I believe that the future of mankind is in space and the sooner we get off this single planet of ours and establish a permanent foothold on the moon the better. To that end I support space exploration efforts by all nations as well as private industry.
