Personal background
I live in Hamburg, Germany. Male, 43 years old.

I used to be a physicist, dealing with some strange events you may observe when colliding subatomic particles at high energies. When I decided to retire from that business and became a professional software developer and consultant, I incidentally paved the way to some even more strange experiences within certain customer relationships ;-)

Since the age of ten or so, i\\'m really fond of science fiction: Thanks to Greg Bear, David Brin, Alan Dean Foster, Julian May, Poul Anderson, James Graham Ballard, Caroline Janice Cherryh, John Shirley, Frank Herbert, Terry Pratchett, H.G. Wells, Philip K. Dick, Stanislaw Lem, Brian W. Aldiss, Michael Bishop, Larry Niven and Jerry Pournelle, Jeffrey A. Carver and, and, and ... Should i mention J.R.R. Tolkien? Of course - and i should mention many, many more!

They made me think about \\'aliens\\' - in short: I learned that there is little difference between those from outer space and those living deep inside of us. Any deeper understanding of our own species will bring us closer to whatever may exist out there. Even if we might never get in close (first, second or third grade) encounter: We should get prepared - for the sake of mankind, and that is: Tolerance, understanding, love.
Thoughts about SETI and SETI@home
I really do believe that we are not alone. There is clear evidence, but no proof.

I don\\'t think I\\'ll meet ET myself. I don\\'t think ET is observing earth just now from close distance.

So far there are no \\'benefits\\' nor \\'dangers\\' near at hand.

I don\\'t even believe that Seti@home will discover proofed signals from extraterrestrial civilizations during my lifetime. But there will be a time, a distinct signal is acknowledged. That can be tomorrow, but i think it will take.

So you may ask: Why do you participate in this project?

Well, there is a challenge. And for now, I think, we should look for them, just because we can do it. If we won\\'t, what should be the reason for our children or grandchildren to do it in our place?
