Profile: Giles and Susan Guthrie

Personal background
I'm from England, but living in Edinburgh. I work in IT Projects for a construction company. I was born in 1972, so I'm beginning to feel quite old! I'm runnning my own web site, called giles-guthrie.com, so please stop by and check it out. My other principle interests are motor sport and photography. I like to cook too, and I like to eat rather too much. The photo is of me and my wife.
Thoughts about SETI and SETI@home
1. Yes, I think it's massively unlikely that with as many planets as there are, at least one other cannot support intelligent biological life, even though these criteria are very narrow. I hope that we discover extraterrestrial life when I'm young and active enough to appreciate it. I'd like us to discover life with the aid of one of my work units!

Hopefully the benefits will be enormous. I wish that we could be advanced by extraterrestrials, but also that we could help them in some way. I'm concerned though that alien species would show or attract the sort of race/sex/creed/class hatred that already blights this planet.

2. I'm not sure that we should advertise ourselves until we're mentally ready to deal with the consequences.

3. I run SETI because I think it's worthwhile. I appreciate and understand the technology involved, and I'm gladdened by its success and proud to be part of it, even though many of my friends think it's pointless. As for suggestions, perhaps you should make more of the Arecibo dish having been used in Goldeneye.
