Profile: Eric Tinney

Personal background
I'm a single, 28 year old guy currently living in rural northeastern Oklahoma as the office manager and Support Team member for a local ISP serving several thousand customers. I was born January 1975 and am a former United States Marine. I have two Jack Russell Terriers, Amos and Little Andy, who mean the world to me. I thought I'd put all my spare processing power being wasted to good use and help my fellow man by running the seti@home software. Plus it looks cool on the office demonstration computers! I believe that as a matter of simple probability, there has to be intelligent life somewhere else in this vast universe in addition to the life on this one minute spec of dust we live on. Living in northeastern Oklahoma, I can personally assure each of you reading this profile that if intelligent life exists, then it exists elsewhere. It's certainly not working at the local Wal-Mart, Git 'n' Go, or Taco Bell. (sigh)
Thoughts about SETI and SETI@home
I believe that is it very naive for humankind to believe that he is the only intelligent life in this Universe. We just haven't discovered others yet. Consider the length of time humankind has been on this Earth. In those hundreds of thosands, or even millions, of years, we've only been radiating stray, "intelligent" signals into space for less than 100 years. We're at the infancy of humankind, with the whole Universe still left to discover. Knowing man's yearning for an understanding of the unknown, it's only technology and logistics which hold us back for exploring the furthest edges of our Universe.
