Profile: PapaCain

Personal background
52-year-old grandpa of three from Chicagoland, USA. I have
been a musician, sailor, private investigator, farm hand,
taxi driver, network administrator and most recently a
paralegal in a corporate law department, not in that order.
I write and perform as a solo acoustic musician, or what
used to be known as a "folk singer," though what I do is not
folk music. I built this screaming monster on which I run
SETI from scratch. It is my third build and by far the best
of the lot. I love my wife, I love my life. I hope you do
too.
Thoughts about SETI and SETI@home
I believe we are doing a good thing here, something that needs to be done to
satisfy the thirst we humans have for knowledge of our world and beyond. I also
believe in reaching out, expanding our universe by doing, not by imagination
alone. But imagination is the first step. I have bought a telescope for my
grandchildren, timing the gift with the recent alignment of the five planets,
and now their imaginations are beginning to flame also. One day soon I will
begin giving them the books which brought me to this day. One could do worse
than to pass his dreams on to his children's children.I think extraterrestrial life exists, I simply believe that any great danger
we may incur lies in sitting here passively waiting for them to come to us. I
don't know how or when we will find them but this project is as good a way as
any for the time being, pending new technological developments which may permit
us to travel and explore rather than simply listening, such as the blacklight
drive currently being developed. It may not be the answer, but it is a
possibility and should be explored. Remember, a few decades ago the market for
calculating computers was estimated at "two, maybe three." That was thirty
years before Bill Gates' famous statement that "640k ought to be enough for
anyone."

A space beacon is a good idea, but in what form? Light? Radio? In what
spectrum of radient energy do the instruments of our "mystery guests" function?
It should be placed on the moon, I think, for the obvious reasons of
interference and range of transmission. As to the message, simple mathematical
calculations and natural sounds from this earth.

I run SETI because it's there.
