Thoughts about SETI and SETI@home
Why do SETI@home? What if? That's why.
It's a great computing project and a great social experiment. A proof-of-concept: we CAN do anything we decide we want or need to do. Folding@home is another great example. We're moving forward. We're better as a species than we sometimed think we are. 3,943,957 people cooperating on a single project - it's truly amazing.
One day some corporation will find a way to sell our spare CPU cycles in the marketplace. When that day comes we must forget about personal profit and remember why we contributed our time and resources: for the common good.
BTW - Still waiting for my first abduction by aliens and the dreaded anal probe.
SETI@home and Astropulse are funded by grants from the National Science Foundation, NASA, and donations from SETI@home volunteers. AstroPulse is funded in part by the NSF through grant AST-0307956.
