Thoughts about SETI and SETI@home |
Opinion about seti,
1 if the universe is infinite in life, splendor, and mystery, divided by the obviously massive # of planets that do not support life, one will find that the chances of life in the universe approaches zero. Since we know this not to be the case, x>1=0. Everything we know will be proven wrong. Ask Galileo Galilee’s eloquent and learned associates. Give me a minute, and I will also prove that Winston Churchill is a carrot through the use of zero.
As with so many other world changing events, the transition from discovery, to contact, to discourse, to trade will happen quickly, if the entirety of the process is not militarized with a nationalistic fervor, or ethically challenged by a religious mania. Sadly, humanity is not ready for an intergalactic "coming out", however the discovery of just that serious possibility might be enough to make some changes. Might.
2 definitely, broadcast the human genome. Easily converted to binary, quad, oct, hexadecimal, or other mathematical system. i say send Richard Nixon’s, because only Nixon could go to china, and we are a dishonest bunch.
3 i run seti@home because i have a bunch of spare proc time, and it is definitely a worthwhile project.
i really want to get off this little ball of mud, and i won't forget my towel.
