Personal background
I'm Philippe Seidel from Bamberg in Germany. By now I'm pupil of the "Clavius Gymnasium" and I'm in 12th grade, which means that I'm going to be finished with school in one and a half years. I'm an active member of a local scout group and actually I'm a troop leader of some 12-13 years old kids. When I was younger I was much more interested in astronomy and natural sciences than I'm now, so SETI@home came to my attention. I'm messing up my computer quite often, so I'm not very far with my statistic, but on every system running longer than two months I installed SETI@home. My hobbies are playing guitar, spending time with and for the scouts and computers, meaning Unix-Administration and smaller programming issues. Lately, I discovered DTP for myself and so I'm desining some CD covers from time to time.
Thoughts about SETI and SETI@home
I think SETI@home is quite a good solution for the SETI programme. On the other hand, the project is (or was) pioneer with distibuted computing on such a large basis and on the other hand I think it does really his job. Just seeing those powerful computers of our days spending times in waste really hurts if you look at it. And additionally, I can understand governments in not wanting to support such an expensive project as SETI with much money, so it' naturally that the project starts to rely on amateur people with interest.
Well, I really think that there is extraterrestrial life out there. But I think humans will discover it when they less expect it. And afterwards, I don't think it will have much influence on humankind, because here on earth everyone thinks of his own problems. But I think in long term, there will be an effective and peaceful work between the cultures which will probably be quite different. I don't think that it will have much more influence than, say, the discovery of a new continent would have. But I certainly support the search for extraterrestrial intelligence, because I think that it can only be beneficial for humans.
