Thoughts about SETI and SETI@home
I absolutely believe in extraterrestial life. Provided that we do not destroy our planet or ourselves, I predict that extraterrestial life will be confirmed within the next 50 years. The benefits of the discovery could range from nothing (if the ET is very far away or the information received is meager), to great (if the ET is nearby or the quantity or quality of information received is outstanding). I believe that mankind's psyche will absorb the shock of ET without any problem to speak of. Some religions or cult groups may have trouble excepting the news. I hope the news is mind blowing and improves mankind. I believe there is very little risk that the information could be dangerous.

I believe that we are already sending beacons of radio information. It would probably not make much sense to send additional beacons randomly into space. If ET were discovered nearby, then world governments should decide on the proper form of return communication.

I run SETI@home because it is real science and stands a reasonable chance of discovering ET. In my view, no more important work could be done that may benefit mankind by giving us a larger world perspective so that we do not destroy ourselves.
