Thoughts about SETI and SETI@home |
I absolutely think that extraterrestrial life exists. I don't remember the figures right now, but anyhow, there are a lot of stars and a lot of planets. It's statistically unlikely that we are the only lifeform in the whole universe. If we discover another planet with life, we will do so after we have achieved interstellar travel at lightspeed or through "space folding". If we don't achieve that, we will be discovered sooner or later, hopefully. When is quite impossible to tell. At least within 5 billion years or there won't be much left here to find.
There are a lot of dangers in a meeting with another intelligent species, but in the end more benefits. There will probably be the normal racist problem. If we can't tolerate our own species, why would we easily tolerate another species? But we will have much to learn. Maybe humanity will become less proud of itself and stop think it's so superior.
If we sent another beacon for somebody to find us, what could we send that somebody could possibly understand?
