Profile: John Nurmi

Personal background
I am VP of Finance and IT for a botanical ingredient supplier in New Jersey. I'm 31 years old, living the single life in northern NJ. In my spare time I play golf, travel, ski, read, play strategy games, see Broadway plays, go to movies, etc. My current aspiration is to get a pilot license so I can travel on my own terms! I don't mind airline travel, but after hearing from a few friends what it is like to fly on a business jet or a private plane, I HAVE to do it!! It may take a long time, and more money than I care to spend, but I will do it. I've always loved flying. It's no coincidence that I have an interest in space exploration also, and the SETI program is a natural point of interest for me. I'm running it on a few systems, with CPU speeds between 1Ghz and 1.8Ghz. I used to run a handful of 333's for the SETI program, hence the somewhat high avg time per workunit... Hey, at least my CPU cycles aren't going to waste!!
Thoughts about SETI and SETI@home
Oh, there is no doubt in my mind that they exist. Consider Drake's equation for a minute. There are more stars in our own galaxy than there are grains of sand on all the beaches of our planet! And, our galaxy is just one of billions of galaxies. So how did mankind ever come up with the notion that our planet is the only place in the universe where life exists?!? It's about the most self-centered notion I've ever heard. I feel sorry for those who have stuck to that belief; it is such a limited way of looking at our universe. We need to open our eyes, our ears, and really get in tune with the universe. It is immensely huge, and it is filled with myriad possibilities. SETI is an awesome way to bring the average person into a grand scientific effort to explore this vast universe we live in. Kudos to the entire SETI@home team for their phenomenal achievement, and to all the other SETI@home crunchers out there!! May we find E.T. soon!
