Personal background
Just another geek doin my part for the Planetary Society; ain't got money, but got lots of MIPS to donate! :)

Below is part of my opinions, they just wouldn't fit in the window below!

Extraterrestrial life DOES exist, if you were an artist with a canvas the size of our universe, would you only paint one pixel?? As far as our "discovering it", I think until we possess the ability to affect another, perhaps more technologically advanced, we would have to give them the impression that we could affect them, and until that point, I feel the more sociologically advanced culture would fear cultural contamination. So we are going to have to find them when the make a mistake and allow some antique transmitter to shoot some RF our way, then take it from there. Otherwise, until we master field propulsion technology or quantum-based transportation technology which will enable us to leave our little "xanadu" in the cosmos, and visit (or at least make a culture think we would) we will be made to believe we ARE alone.
Thoughts about SETI and SETI@home
After all, what would we do; assuming philanthropic, benevolent, and ethical intentions are what we, as a culture, embrace as we explore the cosmos upon mastering interstellar abilities? Knowing the way our culture exists today, if you had the knowledge or technology, would you hand it over or share it with our society? As a species, we are too immature to be trusted with the "keys" to interstellar transportation without limitations. Our civilization is too conquest based, we would justify the contamination of some developing culture with our need for that culture's natural resources or technology. Think about it, we as a species need to understand; the way we treat each other is the way it is assumed we will treat other cultures, whether more advanced or not. So maybe as part of our search we need to look closer to home at the same time. Until we reveal a general cultural ethic that promotes the impression that we can be trusted to preserve the “santictity” of a developing culture in the cosmos, we will be shielded from obtaining technology that will enable us to reach out for fear we will harm ourselves or others. Cultures in the cosmos that embrace an ethic of ethical/sociological responsibility are embraced by other technological cultures, if not included! Think about it, and then do something about it! It starts at home, if everyone did their part, and understood that our ethics as a society are not cutting it, then WE are the ones that will have to change that. Some advanced culture IS NOT going to come and save us from ourselves. If anything they are here learning how a civilization behaves to eventually destroy itself, either from resource depletion/destruction or from technological self-destruction (such as war).
