Personal background
At 8,000 feet elevation, living in Durango, Colorado, brings me closer to the stars and our relatives who are out there somewhere (after all, everything WAS made from the same Big Bang, right? Unless, of course, you get into alternate universes, and alternate realities.) I work in the mortgage industry but also have my own business as a Tarot reader and Reiki practitioner. My 2 Rottweilers are my children. I am an avid reader of sci-fi/fantasy and the Tom Clancy "Jack Ryan" books. I am happy to put my office's DSL line to work crunching the data from SETI.
Thoughts about SETI and SETI@home
The ultimate in human arrogance is to think that we're alone in the universe. All manner of life must exist in our universe, but I'm not so naive to think that discovery of intelligent life forms will be an altruistically peaceful event. Unfortunately, just as humans evolved into warring, territorial societies, so is it likely that extraterrestrials would. Ideally, the positive aspects of humanity will catch up to our technological accomplishments, for a balanced and peaceful existence among all races here on Earth. While the search for extra-terrestrial life is very important, it is also important to 'clean up our own backyard', emotionally, spiritually, environmentally and politically. It is a shame that we can't solve our differences and become a United Nation of Earth, and as a representative of our tiny world, I am embarrassed at our current state of affairs, and wishful for that time in the future when we can be proud of our societies. Perhaps a run-in with another civilization will help shock us into awareness.
