Personal background
Hi! I live in Hamburg, Germany and work as a Physicist at the
Institut für Laser-Physik at Hamburg University
(). I like the
SETI@home project, because it is such a clever idea to not only get the
tremendous amount of galactic RF noise analized, but also to turn the
(scarcely less tremendous) worldwide computer idle time into something useful.
Lately, my computer would idle even more, since my 4 months old daughter grabs
a lot (a lot!) of attention.
Thoughts about SETI and SETI@home
As a scientist I join the opinion of so many others:
Is there ET life? Space is big (really!), so the odds for life evolving
nowhere else than here are small.
Will we discover it? Space is big, so lets not talk about needles and
haystacks.
Will we meet ET? Believing in the speed of light makes me say no.

Sending a beacon is, in my opinion, a waste of resources
(manpower, money and time) for the above stated reasons. One might say that
analyzing RF data is as well, but it is not! SETI is a serious scientific
research project, which will yield valuable results even if no ET is found.
It trains and inspires young scientists, new methods and ideas are developed.
The SETI@home project is an A1 example.
